Sopranos/Winter Con Weekend: WiseGuys N Gals & Space Cadets

Post by Greg2600 » November 28th, 2019, 10:59 pm

So initially my plan was to do Sopranos and Winter Con’s on separate days, so as not to drive myself batty. However, WOODMO :pauuuse: seemed open to doing some splitting at Sopranos, so I bought the Groupon and got there about the time he did on Saturday. In we went, and then had a perplexing conversation at the “ziti” table about how many we’d need for the people we were going to get. I bought a bunch and initially thought I had far too many, and would literally be eating my paper ziti.

After a quick skip around the joint, we started meeting the celebs who were present; we needed, and had no lines. That included Lola Glaudini (most recently on Ray Donovan), Chris Tardio (who played the nitwit Sean – Christopher’s buddy), and Ray Abruzzo (Little Carmine) who for some reason was absurdly priced at $40.

To our chagrin, several others were not there yet. Spotted LatinoHeat/MishedOut in the Sirico line and had a chat. I then went for one of my past Chiller passes, David Proval (terrific as Richie Aprile). Joined back with Woody, and we got “Agent Grasso” Frank Pando and then went exploring. The mini-set recreations were very clever and well done. The go-go bar recreation was funny.

About half an hour later, finally Matt Servitto (NYCC miss) has arrived and we went right to his table. The guy is funny and a ton of energy, but I had him sign my Banshee cast piece and we got photos. Since he was done with his comedy routine, I got another Chiller skip, Tony Darrow from Goodfellas. At this point, we still wanted a couple people, but they either had no arrived or were consistently NOT at their tables. We opted for Meadow’s boyfriend Finn, played by Will Janowitz. I was about to get Sofia Milos but she had a long line, and then left for a panel. It’s now about 12:30PM, and we both decide to give up and leave.

PS: Shoutout to P-Bruno34 who recognized us!

I get back to my car, and head up the Turnpike to the GWB en route to Winter Con. I make pretty good time, but since I’m arriving far later than usually, there’s zero free parking. In fact, due to casino construction, the parking lot is a disaster. I can’t figure out how to get into the parking garage so I just park in the Aqueduct Racetrack for 7 dollars, ha ha. Walked a bit, and I’m inside, and as designed, casino’s are like a maze. Unfortunately, the convention is NOT using the same entrance as previous years, so I have to walk to the other side of the damn building near the elevators to get up to the sixth floor. Very annoying.

Once inside, I see a couple decent lines for the Farscape headliners, and nobody else. While most of the Sopranos’ names were reasonably priced or I shared them with Woodster, not so here. The Farscape names are 40/40 primarily with no combo pricing. The other names are not much better. It’s tough to truly cry foul as this show consistently pays the appearance fee for some rather rare and old names. I was actually glad I forgot my BSG comic book at home, had no money left for Dirk Benedict to sign it!

Anywho, first off I get Laurette Sprang from the original BSG and make small talk, getting a camera assist from “billy sparrow” who was only there for BSG.

Apparently the Farscape cast photo ops were a disaster. The line was enormous, and extended out in the hallway, so they were away for a while. Finally by around 2:30 they began returning. Before you ask, YES, I was a Farscape fan! I might have missed a few episodes here and there if the VCR was on the fritz, but I always enjoyed it. Such a weirdo show but full of great drama, amazing makeup and costumes. I brought along my cast piece, which had Ms. Hey and Edgley on it plus Mr. Henson. Spotted btvsp3 aka Steve and hung around with him for a while. First I got Anthony Simcoe aka D’Argo, who I learned gave up acting after the series. Then I see that series creator Rockne S. O’Bannon had just arrived on the day and was signing. I went to the table, and quickly realized he was doing it free of charge! I had a brief convo with him about the originals of the artwork I used for the cast piece, which was from the mini-comic that Ramón Pérez did several years ago. Next I got Lani Tupo, very nice New Zealand actor who played the villain Crais as well as voiced the character Pilot.

It took a while but Claudia Black and Ben Browder, aka Aeryn and Crichton returned to their tables. I waited a bit for Claudia, who had a shorter line. She was now (post-pro’s) doing table photos, and I contemplated getting one, as she’s still so beautiful. My street shot from NYC is fine though, especially since she couldn’t come out from the tables and was just leaning. Browder’s line took much longer, as there was a separate one for VIP, but he agreed to get us all before taking a break.

I then stop by Tom Skerritt’s table and have a quick chat with him, which was very nice. He was pro only for whatever the reason (same as at The Hollywood Show) so I had to wait an hour or so for that. I then head to the panel section to see the Farscape panel. The convention I think fouled up again, and for some reason they used a smaller area than in years past for panel stage and seating. As a result, 1/3 of the people had no seats, terrible. The panel was fun and enlightening though. In any case, I did the Skerritt pro op (free jpeg download), then got a photo with OG/BSG cast member Herb Jefferson, Jr. aka Boomer.

From there I huffed back to my car, and headed west. Got into midtown, it was getting colder, and decided to try a spot for new film Knives Out. While I was there, I saw that director Rian Johnson and cast Daniel Craig/Michael Shannon were at another spot earlier. I decided to wait where I was, since I didn’t know if they’d left from the other location. Later on I learned they were still there, and the crowd was like ¼ of where I was. I probably should have just left right then and tried it, but didn’t. Craig arrived and gave his crap auto’s, and did one photo. Someone yelled about driving 5 hours to meet him, but Daniel could care less, and skipped him. Rian arrived and took care of everyone. I got a selfie, as I forgot to bring this IMAX Last Jedi poster I had with me. Shortly after, I gave someone a ride to his bus stop, and continued home.

On Sunday, once I had confirmation that Drea de Matteo (Adriana) was definitely attending, I made the 15 minute or so drive back to Sopranos Con. Got in with help, and went to her line, which was HUGE. It moved like molasses too. My friend Wong was there, so hung with him a bit. About an hour and forty minutes in, I finally got to her. I asked the handler how many dumb ziti the photo would cost me. He seemed perplexed, and said something to her, and she agreed, and next thing I’m getting the photo for free. Again, what confusion, but thankfully got her. Since I had ziti left over, I wound up using it. First I got the still-lovely Sofia Milos, and since he was finally at his table (not the poker one), Jason Cerbone (Jackie Jr.). Wong had some ziti left, and wanted nobody else, so I bought it off him. I intended to use it on Ray Franza, but he again wasn’t around. I found one of the promoters, who said he was the only guest who simply no-showed. With that, I used it on Robert Funaro (Eugene) who was a regular character on the show for 4 seasons. I then bought a few canoli’s for desert and went home.

Great hanging and splitting at S.C.

While my thoughts on the show have been well documented already, it really was an awesome assemblage of rare cast members that will likely never duplicated again.

And yes, great to meet P.Bruno, it's always nice to actually see people in person who post here.

Cool stuff. I think that’s Gigi Edgley blurrily photo bombing your Ben Browder pic.

That Tom Skerritt pic rocked me. Like us all...he got old.

I quickly got over it by seeing good ol' Boomer from BSG. Met him at Chiller in the early 2000s. Great dude.

Love all the pics! Happy Thanksgiving!
