THE MOOCH HAS COME BACK TO MARKED OUT!!!

Post by THE MOOCH » April 10th, 2018, 10:33 pm

...at least for an hour or so to update everyone on my whereabouts.

So I'm in the US for about 7 weeks or so. Over the weekend I went to UFC 223 and then got together with some old friends for Wrestlemania which is what reminded me of Marked Out so I felt like making a post. I hope everyone is well as it seems like some regulars from my time are still around.

I haven't really watched wrestling in 7 years with the exception of a few Wrestlemanias and some other odds and ends.

I don't really use Facebook much and only a handful of you are fb friends so I'm not sure how much you guys already know. Anyway, since leaving this hobby behind and graduating from The Ohio State University, I've become a world traveler over the past few years. I've been to approximately 50 countries and all the states. I've traveled fairly extensively in each country and in 2017 I was living and working in Australia for the past year.

As I want to own my own business, I've been working for a bunch of small businesses over the last few years to learn and not commit to anything too long term. I have my real estate license in NY, I worked in Alaska for a few months helping my friend get his fishing charter business up and running and I had a marketing job in Australia for the year with a small company of about 30 employees. With that money, I've been able to sustain my traveling throughout Asia, Oceania, Europe, South and North America. It's not expensive as you think, especially for me. ;)

I've been dating a girl since the end of 2015. We lived together and she studied abroad in Australia as well. Kelsie graduates from Penn State in a few weeks, (she's a couple years younger than me). She studied Bio Behavioral Health and like me has to figure out what's next. I don't plan to get married or have kids until 30 so at least another 5 years or so if you're wondering and I think she's on board with that. One day at a time.

In May, I'll be taking my GMAT (an entrance exam that colleges require for your MBA) so currently I am just focused on studying for that and living in State College with her in the mean time. This summer, our plan is to move to Europe and work abroad for the year. In the fall of 2019, I intend on coming back to the US to pursue my MBA. I won't go back to OSU, as I want to go somewhere warm. Likely a D1 school in California, Arizona, Texas, or Florida. Let's see!

After that, I have really fallen in love with Australia and especially Perth where I studied abroad and lived most of the time in 2017. I definitely think becoming a permanent resident in Australia is a likely scenario down the line and Kelsie wants to as well. I love the warmth, beaches, laid back lifestyle, cleanliness and good quality of life that OZ offers. After this idiot taking office, and seeing the corruption around the world, it's definitely demoralized me out of pursuing something in politics. I really don't consider America a first world country anymore with all the shootings and high gun mortality rate, the terrible disaster relief programs (Puerto Rico), no national healthcare like the rest of the world, ineffective government etc.

I've definitely learned a lot from my travels, more so than college and I am a lot stronger as a result. I will continue to travel as I want to see and learn as much as possible. It's kind of a sickness like trying to meet every famous person possible, but for now I'm fairly tired of the nonstop lifestyle and need a break. Most people don't understand the difficulty of backpacking, and think it's all fun and games and like a vacation. I can assure you it is anything but and takes a toll on you, mentally, physically and emotionally. So after taking a few months off, we intend to move to Catalonia to begin our year long journey.

As for the hobby, not much to speak of. I very rarely go to events and in Perth where I lived the previous year, there isn't many events. I did however go to the Australian Open in Melbourne and the Olympics in South Korea before heading home to the US. I met a bunch of the fighters at UFC, a few tennis players, but that's about it in the previous year or so.

The Eagles won the Super Bowl while I was back in Australia. I was losing my god damn mind. I went to the casino sports bar as it is the only 24/7 sports bar and games take place in the middle of the night or early morning. There is surprisingly a lot of American Football fans and everyone was so happy for me as I was crying and yelling and beside myself. I was wondering if the fire would kind of go out for my passion for football now that my team finally is on top, but needless to say it hasn't. Now I want the Eagles to win again so I can attend the super bowl (I always said when the Eagles are in it, I'd be there. This year I had already booked everything for the Australian Open and Olympics so there was no way to make it). I could see myself working in sports as well as there is basically nothing I love more.

So yeah, that's about it! Feel free to add me on FB or follow me on Twitter @austinfsk but you should know I don't take on The Mooch persona anymore. Not a good look. (Although I did have a radio show in college called Matty Ice and The Mooch). I hope all is well with you guys, feel free to post in here about yourselves or anything you want me to see and I'll try to follow this thread the next couple of days.

Oh and one more thing. I am thinking about going to the GTSM show in NJ as there will be a few Philadelphia Eagles that I'd like to meet. Would love to see you guys there!

OMG The Mooch!

Sadly your smiley was removed in early 2017.

I have two questions

1) How much did all that travel cost

2) I'm on your FB and don't recall seeing you date a girl since 2015. Which one is she?

Like I said, I don't post much on FB, I changed my relationship status way back when but I think it was private anyway lol.

I actually did do the math on most of my travel. Do I remember is the question.

In 2014, I studied abroad in Australia from July - December. I remember the whole semester was about $12,000 extra in addition to my tuition. This includes all my travel expenses to China, New Zealand, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia as well. It was quite expensive as Australia is expensive and I had fairly expensive accommodation on campus as well.

In 2015, starting in June after I graduated from Ohio State, I took a Eurotrip until the end of September. where I bought the Eurail pass for about $950 which allowed me nearly three months of unlimited train travel. Great decision as some trips cost $100+ alone. The whole trip cost about $6200 and I went to about 20 countries in Europe.

In 2016, I drove cross country over the month of May, worked in Alaska for the summer and went to South America for the Olympics. I then traveled throughout Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Uruguay, Paraguay, a quick stopover in Colombia. I would estimate this trip was about $5000-$6000 total for 3 months.

2017, I flew to India in January and spent a month there with Kelsie before going to Australia for the year. (Cost about $1000 with flights to OZ, India is cheap) I didn't really spend any more money that I would back home on the cost of living and obviously made money in Oz through work. I also went on two 10 day trips back to Thailand to some new islands and Vietnam and Cambodia. My one bedroom apartment in Perth was sick, overlooking the ocean. Rent was about $1000 per month split between the two of us. Cheaper than NYC for sure.

2018, Then I went to Melbourne, South Korea and Philippines before going back home. 6 week trip, this cost approx $2250?

In total, I would estimate under $30,000 total for a couple years being abroad including most accommodation at hostels, friends houses or wherever? Most people probably spend that on themselves just living at home and going to fancy dinners, expensive rent in New York or where ever you guys are from.

Yes very true 30K in 2 years is pretty good for all that travel.

I guess my next question is how do you score such relatively good deals?

My budget is usually like $30 per day, closer to $50 a day in Australia. Like $15-$20 per night in a hostel, $10-$15 on food, what else do I need? A few dollars in transit I guess per day. In a lot of places in Asia, $10 for a meal is ridiculous like Surf and Turf or some nice meal. I also have lots of friends that I stayed with in Brazil, Thailand, and throughout Europe which saves some money.

I don't ball out if I go out to drink. If you go out in Miami, drinks might be like $20 each. That's nuts! It's all about the pregame. I'm damn good at finding cheap flights, I don't mind layovers if it saves money and flying is a lot cheaper in the rest of the world than the US because there isn't such a monopoly.
