AEW on TNT extended through 2023; new series ordered

Post by ICW » January 15th, 2020, 11:42 am

Wrestling fans can continue to enjoy the new Golden Age because TNT’s AEW: Dynamite has been renewed through 2023. And it’s also getting an offshoot.

WarnerMedia announced on Wednesday that not only has it extended its deal with All Elite Wrestling, the new wrestling league that launched only a year ago, but that there will also be an additional night of AEW — a second show that has received a straight-to-series order.

Additional reporting by Dave Meltzer

A major victory was had in the "Wednesday Night Wars" as TNT announced they have extended their deal with AEW for Dynamite through 2023.

Our Dave Meltzer is reporting the deal is for four years and $175 million, just under $45 million per year, and includes TNT having an option for 2024 at a significantly increased price.

Additionally, the Wednesday press release mentioned that WarnerMedia and AEW will launch another show, but didn't provide any additional information other than it being on "another night". WarnerMedia oversees TNT, TBS, and truTV in addition to HBO Max, a new OTT streaming service that is launching this May, so it's not a definite the new program will also be on TNT.

Meltzer said that, "When the new show launches, the Wednesday tapings would expand and also include matches taped for the streaming show Dark which is not going away. This means there will be four hours a week of the product, allowing more time to showcase more talent, which has been limited by the current format."

AEW's secondary show Dark, made up of matches taped before and after Dynamite, debuts on YouTube every Tuesday night.

AEW launched last October, going head to head with WWE NXT on USA Network. Both sides have experienced success with AEW maintaining a slight lead in both average viewership and the 18-49 demo.

Good for them but haven't seen anything close to those numbers. Pretty sure the initial deal was more than a year

I think Dark is staying on YouTube.

This new show doesn't have to be on TNT. It could be on any WarnerMedia property (including HBO Max).

Dark is the 2nd show talked about. Will be on TNT. No day/time yet and may not even be 52 episodes. Dave's numbers I think were based on an all new show. With this already being taped it wont be anymore work for the AEW crew

It's going to be interesting to see if WWE counters with another hour of programming to go head-to-head with this new AEW show (which sounds like it's Dark).

And if they're moving Dark to a WarnerMedia station/platform, does something replace Dark on YouTube?

ALSO ALSO: you're competing against the NBA and Tuesdays and Thursdays. Mondays is the NFL (and RAW), Saturday night is against UFC, Sunday is big time NFL...

It sounds like AEW doesn't want to go against the NFL so Sunday and Monday would be eliminated. Tuesday or Friday?

Dave said the plan is to make this a strong, second show and not a "B level" show.
